چکیده

Collective decision making is the process of mapping the individual views of several individual agents into a joint decision. The need for collective decision making mechanisms is abundant, not just in the realm of politics, but also for a wide range of scientific and technological applications. These include, for instance, logistics, grid computing, and recommender systems. The alternatives to be decided upon often have a combinatorial structure: an alternative is characterised by a tuple of variables, each ranging over a finite domain. Classical approaches to collective decision making, developed in social choice theory, do not take the computational limitations induced by the combinatorial nature of the problem into account. For instance, if we are asked to elect a committee consisting of k representatives, choosing from a pool of n candidates, then we are in fact faced with a social choice problem with ( n k ) alternatives. Asking each voter for their full preferences over these ( n k ) alternatives may not be feasible in practice. Similarly, if we have to choose between accepting or rejecting each of n different propositions, then we are dealing with a social choice problem with 2 possible outcomes. In this talk I will report on a number of recent developments in the area of collective decision making in combinatorial domains. This includes the study of languages for the compact representation of preferences [2, 4], the design of voting rules for multi-issue elections [1], and the analysis of the computational complexity of decision problems arising in judgment aggregation [3].

Preference Handling in Combinatorial Domains: From AI to Social Choice

In both individual and collective decision making, the space of alternatives from which the agent (or the group of agents) has to choose often has a combinatorial (or multi-attribute) structure. We give an introduction to preference handling in combinatorial domains in the context of collective decision making, and show that the considerable body of work on preference representation and elicita...

Combinatorial Aggregation

Social Choice Theory (SCT), and the study of collective methods for decision making in general, have received a lot of attention in the AI community in recent years. The reasons for this focus are clear: SCT provides tools for the analysis of collective choices of groups of agents, and as such is of immediate relevance to the study of multiagent systems. At the same time, studies in AI have led...

A distributed protocol for collective decision-making in combinatorial domains

In this paper, we study the problem of collective decisionmaking over combinatorial domains, where the set of possible alternatives is a Cartesian product of (finite) domain values for each of a given set of variables, and these variables are not preferentially independent. Due to the large alternative space, most common rules for preference aggregation cannot be directly applied to compute a w...

Happiness, Flow and the Bottom Line

This paper relates a series of current development in the literature of economics and psychology as they relate to decision making by households and business firms. The first part of the paper reviews recent literature dealing with happiness and subjective wellbeing. In the second part of the paper recent developments in management science that make use of intuition and mental focus are related...

Multiple attribute group decision making with linguistic variables and complete unknown weight information

Interval type-2 fuzzy sets, each of which is characterized by the footprint of uncertainty, are a very useful means to depict the linguistic information in the process of decision making. In this article, we investigate the group decision making problems in which all the linguistic information provided by the decision makers is expressed as interval type-2 fuzzy decision matrices where each of ...
